Impact of 2019-20 project

Engaging Local School Stakeholders with Common Law Concepts and Values Through Experiential Learning

Expected Deliverables & Actual Deliverables:

1. Sessions of law videos and sharing by lawyers and/or other legal professionals for local school stakeholders, including but not limited to teachers.

--> Due to the outbreak of COVID-19 in early 2020, our partnering schools have followed the advice from Education Bureau to take preventive measures and postponed collaboration activities to prevent spread of virus and to follow the advice from Education Bureau. Sharing sessions have been thus postponed and wll be delivered online in light of promotion of e-learning.

Sharing sessions should be held in late 2020 / early 2021 in the form of ZOOM webinar.

During the sharing sessions, participants will fill in the questionnaire survey which will be used to measure the impacts of the project. The ethical approval for the survey has been sought.

2. An online legal guide (in the form of Youtube videos) will be developed for illustrating common law concepts and values.

--> The legal guide along with law videos has been prepared and will be revised upon the feedback of the sharing sessions. They will be uploaded online on the website under the HKU Law faculty domain after the sharing sessions and further revision.

3. An online discussion platform such as a public Facebook group or a webpage will also be constructed to facilitate the dissemination of common law concepts and values among local school stakeholders relevant to the legal issues encountered in the school setting.

--> The content of online discussion platform in the form of Facebook group has been prepared and will be opened and accessible to participants of the sharing sessions as well as the public after the completion of the sharing session.

4. Conference paper(s)/journal article(s) on impact of common law education on local school stakeholders through experiential learning.

--> As conference paper/ journal papers on the impacts of the sharing sessions will be conducted based on the data collected from the questionnaire survey distributed in sharing sessions, which is postponed to late 2020/early 2021 due to COVID-19. It is expected that the conference paper/journal papers will be ready in 12 months after collecting the data from the sharing sessions.

Impacts:

The proposed project is expected to impact local school stakeholders, including but not limited to teachers and parents, with a deeper understanding of general common law concepts. It is also expected to impact them with a greater appreciation of specific common law values like justice and equality for attaining social inclusion in the local school setting.

Due to COVID-19, the face to face sharing sessions, which were proposed to be held in early 2020, have been postponed by the partnering schools in addressing the preventive measures and guidelines issued by Education Bureau to prevent the spread of virus for the safety of teachers and students. As the infection rate has decreased and e-learning has become popular, we propose to host the sharing sessions in online format in late 2020/ early 2021 and further re-design teaching materials to increase the experiential learning element and the learning outcomes of local school stakeholders.

We will deliver common law concepts in the form of videos and interactive lecture with discussion to increase the awareness of local school stakeholders on legal values and concepts including negligence and discrimination with current issues, especially COVID-19. We aim to enhance the degree of legal values and legal awareness of local teachers, especially on issues related to tort law and discrimination.
